Final Stair Section with Materials

Stair 1

Materials
This stair is made of solid concrete and sits flush with the floor on level one and the wall that it is next to. the steel cables running vertically down from the ceiling are only needed as a balustrade on one side. The other side of the stair is flush with a window the looks out the back of the design.

Stair 2

Materials
Two sheets of steel were used in the making of this stair. Alternating steps come from the same sheet of steel that has been cut and bent to create the tread. The steel will have a rusted look that will surround the users as they walk down the stairs. At the bottom of the stair case is a viewing gallery showing the newly revived motorcycles that will contrast the rustic feel of the walk down the stairs.

This is the desired material for the construction of the stairs.

A large curve at each bend has been created deliberately to aid the transport of bikes up and down the stairs by running them slightly up one side to gain enough heigh to get them onto the tread above.

Colour/ Material Selection for Developed Design

This shows some of the combinations of materials and colours that were considered for the exterior of the design.

A selection of possible colour schemes and materials.

This was the final material palette that was selected. The dark exterior with the wooden interior in the upper level was chosen to represent Steinway and Sons because it mimics the colours of a grand piano.

Redesigned Upper Level

After some consideration it was decided that the entire upper level should be redesigned. This was due to the simplicity of the original design as well as the desire to create a more appealing level for the client, Steinway and Sons.
